Insurrection day

An Insurrection Timeline

On January 6, 2021, a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., attempting to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

Timeline of the Attack

  • 12:00 PM: President Trump addressed a "Save America" rally near the White House, repeating claims of election fraud and urging supporters to "fight like hell".
  • 1:00 PM: Protesters reached the Capitol perimeter and began overwhelming police barriers.
  • 2:11 PM: The building was breached as rioters shattered windows and entered the northwest side.
  • 2:13 PM: Vice President Mike Pence was evacuated from the Senate chamber.
  • 2:44 PM: Protester Ashli Babbitt was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer while attempting to breach the Speaker's Lobby.
  • 5:40 PM: The Capitol was declared secure after reinforcements from the National Guard and state police arrived.
  • 3:42 AM (Jan 7): After reconvening, Congress officially certified Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.

Casualties and Damage

  • Fatalities: Seven deaths are directly linked to the attack, including Babbitt (shot), several other rioters who suffered medical emergencies, and five police officers who died in the days and weeks following the event.
  • Injuries: Approximately 140 law enforcement officers were injured during the violence.
  • Property Damage: The attack resulted in an estimated $1.5 million to $30 million in damage and security costs.

Legal and Political Aftermath

  • Impeachment: President Trump was impeached for "incitement of insurrection" on January 13, 2021, but was later acquitted by the Senate.
  • Prosecutions: By early 2025, nearly 1,600 individuals were charged with federal crimes ranging from trespassing to seditious conspiracy.
  • Pardons (2025): Upon returning to office on January 20, 2025, President Trump issued full and unconditional pardons to all individuals convicted of or charged with crimes related to the January 6 attack.
  • Current Status (2026): As of the fifth anniversary today, the official White House website has been updated to frame the events as a "miscarriage of justice" against "peaceful patriotic protesters". Meanwhile, Democratic leaders continue to hold commemorations to prevent what they describe as the "whitewashing" of history.
